If your employer requires you to take specific classes or?
Should and would are two different things. It really depends on the employers and what training they require. The company I currently work for has sent me to a number of training programs (Solid Works Basics was a week long) that they have paid for. At the time most of us had AutoCAD experience, but I doubt anyone in our department would have paid to send ourselves, even to keep our jobs. It had simply been one of those learn on your own situations. They also have a tuition assistance program that pays for college courses and other job-relevant classes. Even my PMP certification was paid for. Four of us were sent for the training (33 hours are required to sit for the exam) and then they paid for the exam itself (the other three dropped out). Of course, that is different than someone trying to qualify for a better position. We have manufacturing technicians (no degree), engineering technicians (two-year degree), and engineers (BS degrees). A number of our employees have gone to school to upgrade their qualifications, and they have received tuition assistance along the way. I even have a binder from several of my courses.
